Aging means change. As we get older, these changes often mean needing a little help from family and friends. (DESCRIPTION) A series of photos depict various combinations of older and younger adults. (SPEECH) But who provides that help and how does this experience affect the people involved? The answers to these questions can help America maintain and improve quality of life for older adults and their family members and friends. (DESCRIPTION) Buildings at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the University of Michigan (SPEECH) That's the goal of NSOC, the National Study of Caregiving. The study is sponsored by the National Institute on Aging and is being led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the University of Michigan. Westat is collecting the study information. (DESCRIPTION) A diverse range of participants (SPEECH) Family members and friends who helped participants in NHATS, the National Health and Aging Trends Study, are invited to take part in NSOC. We ask NHATS participants to provide contact information for those family members and friends who support them in their daily activities. (DESCRIPTION) A white figure from the NSOC logo (SPEECH) Only a few thousand people will be selected for this important study. (DESCRIPTION) Dozens of the figures from coast to coast on a map of the United States. (SPEECH) Each represents many thousands of other people who provide help to an older relative or friend. Because of the scientific process for selecting participants, individuals who are selected cannot be replaced. And the more voices that are heard, the more we'll learn. (DESCRIPTION) A woman wears a headset; a man sits at a laptop. (SPEECH) NSOC wants to make this as convenient as possible for participants. The survey takes just 30 minutes. Each participant will be mailed a $20 check for completing the interview. The study is voluntary and confidential. Participants can choose not to answer any question and they can stop at any time. We follow strict procedures to ensure that all information identifying participants is kept private and safe. Answers are used for research purposes only.
